Shawn Kemp faces felony charges after Tacoma Mall shooting.
After a shooting incident last month outside a Tacoma mall, former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp has been charged with one count of first-degree assault.
According to the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Washington was the location of the crime.
Kemp, 53, was arrested hours after the March 8 drive-by shooting outside the mall, according to online court documents and a Pierce County Sheriff's Office official.
The former NBA player, though, was released after the prosecutor said the next day that no urgent charges would be filed.
On Friday, that changed, and Kemp was charged. Court documents say he "did with the intent to inflict great bodily harm, i.e. to kill or maim"
purposefully assault someone with a firearm or lethal weapon or any force or methods likely to cause serious bodily harm or death."
"He has cooperated with the police and the prosecutor throughout this process," said attorney Tim Leary.
He believes the jury will find him justified in defending himself that afternoon after hearing the witnesses and seeing the proof.
